The narrator describes actions briefly and gives insightful but unobtrusive analyses based on what can be seen, but does not reveal the inner lives of the characters and does not explain or interpret the story for the reader. He is a small, round-shouldered man with ill-fitting clothes and a nervous disposition. In either case, when Hurston quotes Elijah and the others, she attempts to capture not only their characteristic turns of phrase, but their pronunciation as well, as in this line from Elijah: With a good ear for speech and dialect, she wrote lines for her characters that sounded the way she heard rural people speaking.
